I finally tried Kimi AI — and these 7 beginner prompts helped me unlock its useful features

Kimi, a Chinese-developed AI model that rivals the likes of ChatGPT and Claude, has experienced a surge in popularity as of late. Beijing startup Moonshot AI is behind it and has recently unveiled its advanced Kimi K3 model.

On its own, Kimi AI is efficient at handling some of the heavy lifting users ask of it. Those include parsing massive PDFs, digesting entire codebases and running complex multi-step technical workflows. It also excels at tasks that involve Chinese language optimization and is less likely to experience hallucinations, since it defaults to structured, step-by-step analysis.

With all that information in mind, I went into my first meeting with Kimi AI to see what basic and complex tasks it could manage. These seven prompts did a great job of showing me how Kimi AI can provide users with complex subject simplification, skill building, info extraction from PDFs and more.

Spending some time with Kimi and unmasking its capabilities

When the time finally arrived for me to put Kimi AI through its paces, I requested that it generate a collection of prompts that every beginner should test out with it first. After checking out all the prompts it spit out, I recognized how many of them are targeted toward the common tasks I give to other chatbots.

Explaining the most complex subjects in a way that makes it understandable for a teenager, role-playing as a specific professional to deliver steps to success and helping a user choose between two options before making a major decision are among those aforementioned tasks I regularly delegate to AI tools. But one of Kimi AI’s suggested prompts emphasized its signature ability to condense data-loaded PDFs.

Here are the seven beginner prompts it gave to try out on my own:

  • The Simplifier: Explain [complex topic] like I'm 15. Use an analogy from everyday life, and highlight the 3 most common misconceptions people have about it.
  • The Role-Play Expert: You are a senior [profession] with 20 years of experience. I am a beginner trying to [specific goal]. Give me a 5-step action plan, and for each step tell me the biggest mistake beginners make and how to avoid it.
  • The Decision Framework: I need to choose between [Option A] and [Option B] for [specific situation]. Build me a decision matrix with criteria that actually matter for this context, score each option, but also tell me which criteria I might be overweighting or ignoring.
  • The Executive Summary Extractor: I have a [X]-page PDF [attach file]. Please read through the entire document and produce a structured summary with: (a) the core thesis or main argument, (b) a bullet-point breakdown of every major section, (c) all key data points, statistics, and dates mentioned, and (d) a list of any conclusions or recommendations. If the document is too long, process it in chunks and maintain continuity between sections.
  • The Research Synthesizer: Summarize the current consensus and the main points of debate about [topic] as of [current year]. Cite specific thinkers, studies, or developments, and tell me what a reasonable person could disagree about.
  • The Creative Constraint: I want to write a [short story/email/presentation] about [topic], but it needs to feel [tone: e.g., urgent but warm/authoritative but approachable]. Give me 3 radically different opening hooks, then help me develop the one I choose.
  • The Skill Builder: Teach me the core mental model for [skill] in 10 minutes. Use a mini-case-study I can follow along with, give me 2 practice problems to solve, and then review my answers when I tell you what I got.

A pro tip that Kimi made clear is that constant interaction with one’s prompts will produce even stronger results (which is a given at this point for anyone like me who uses AI tools daily:

The magic happens when you iterate. My first answer is a draft. Tell me "make it shorter," "add more detail on step 3," or "rewrite that for a 10-year-old," and you'll see how much better the second round gets.

As expected, Kimi AI proved to be just as competent at handling my assignments. It did a phenomenal job at simplifying the topic of neuroscience, helped me decide between choosing either an Audeze Maxwell 2 or SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro wireless gaming headset for my PS5 and performed a deep research session into the rising resistance against data centers.

Bottom line

After my first session with Kimi AI, I made the easy decision to slot it into my bag of AI tools that I use all the time. Moonshot AI’s tool can stand side by side with ChatGPT by allowing OpenAI’s model to polish my edits for creative projects, while Kimi AI conducts heavy background research and technical analysis into the main topic behind that project.

But on its own, Kimi AI has the power to carry out the tasks I give to its competitors and the duties that it does exceedingly well.

As a bonus, here are two more beneficial prompts Kimi AI users should put to good use:

  • The Architecture Onboarding Guide (for digesting entire codebases): I have a zip file/folder containing a codebase [attach or describe]. First, identify the tech stack and folder structure. Then trace the main execution path from entry point to core logic. Finally, generate a 'new developer onboarding guide' that explains: what this app does, how the major components talk to each other, where the business logic lives, and which files a beginner should read first.
  • The Debug Detective (for complex multi-step technical workflows): I'm encountering [specific error message or buggy behavior] in my [language/framework] project. Here's the relevant code and context [paste code/logs]. Walk me through a systematic debugging workflow: (1) list the 5 most likely root causes in order of probability, (2) for each cause, give me a specific one-line command or code snippet to verify it, (3) once I tell you the results, help me implement the fix and write a regression test so it doesn't happen again.
