Claude Opus 5 isn't just for work — these are the 5 prompts retirees should try first

Quite often when people talk about AI, especially the latest models, they tend to lean towards productivity and workflows. And while many people use AI in the workplace, they're quite useful outside of the office setting — including in areas many seniors might find useful.

For many retirees, the priorities look a little different. Whether that means finally sorting through years of paperwork, making sure retirement income stretches as far as possible, preserving family memories, planning the trip you've been putting off for years or finally learning something you've always been curious about.

That's where Claude Opus 5 surprised me. While it's often praised for coding and workplace productivity, I've found it's just as useful for the kinds of everyday projects that become more important after retirement. The key is giving it your own documents, photos and goals instead of asking generic questions.

Here are five prompts I'd start with.

1. Make sense of your retirement finances

Prompt: I've uploaded my monthly bills and credit card statements. Create a simple monthly budget, point out any recurring subscriptions I may have forgotten about, and suggest realistic ways I could reduce expenses without sacrificing the things I enjoy.

One of the biggest adjustments in retirement is moving from earning a paycheck to managing income from several different sources. Between Social Security, pensions, investments and monthly bills, it can be surprisingly easy to lose track of where your money is going. Just be sure not to upload anything confidential or personal into the AI model. Instead, use estimates of your pension or social security checks, then let Claude organize and come up with a plan for you.

Claude is particularly good at spotting patterns across multiple documents, making it much easier to see the big picture without spending hours with a calculator.

2. Turn decades of family photos into stories

Prompt: I'm uploading photos from several family vacations. Ask me questions about each one, then write a story my grandchildren would enjoy reading. Keep my own voice and include details I mention during our conversation.

Most families have thousands of digital photos that rarely get looked at after they're taken. Instead of leaving them buried in folders, Claude can help turn them into stories your children and grandchildren will actually want to read.

Rather than inventing details, it interviews you first, helping preserve the memories behind each picture. You'll discover that the finished result feels much more personal than a simple photo album because it captures the stories that only you know.

3. Plan the trip you've always wanted to take

Prompt: Help me plan a two-week trip to Italy. I enjoy history, good food, and walking, but I'd rather avoid rushed schedules. Compare transportation options, suggest hotels, estimate costs, and build a day-by-day itinerary.

Many retirees finally have the freedom to travel without worrying about limited vacation days. The challenge is balancing sightseeing with enough downtime to actually enjoy the experience.

Claude is particularly good at weighing lots of moving parts at once, from transportation and budgets to walking distances and hotel locations. You can then keep refining the itinerary until it matches exactly the kind of trip you want.

4. Decode confusing paperwork

Prompt: Summarize this insurance policy in plain English. Tell me what it covers, what it doesn't, any deadlines I should know about, and highlight anything that might surprise someone reading it for the first time.

Retirement often comes with more paperwork than many people expect. Insurance policies, Medicare documents, legal forms and financial statements are rarely written in plain English.

Instead of struggling through pages of legal language, ask Claude to explain what actually matters. It's a quick way to understand lengthy documents before deciding whether you need to speak with a financial adviser or insurance representative.

5. Learn something you've always wanted to know

Prompt: I want to learn astronomy, but I'm starting from scratch. Create an eight-week learning plan. After each lesson, quiz me with a few questions before moving on. Adjust the pace based on how well I understand the material.

One of the biggest advantages of retirement is finally having time to learn simply because you're interested.

Whether you've always wanted to understand astronomy, photography, art history or another subject, Claude can build lessons that adapt as you go instead of forcing you through a fixed course. Because Claude remembers what you've already covered during the conversation, it can build on previous lessons instead of repeating itself.

What I like about these prompts is that they solve real problems that people might struggle to handle alone. Rather than asking Claude to generate something from scratch, you're giving it your own documents, photos and goals. That's where it becomes genuinely useful because the AI acts as a financial organizer (although it's not a substitute for a human financial advisor), travel planner, document interpreter, family historian and personal tutor all in one place.
